During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious start to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Free buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
