Donald Trump’s latest threat to enforce an further 100% tariff on products from China has been described as a “prime illustration” of American hypocrisy, as stated by the China’s leadership.

A representative of the ministry further commented that the nation could enact its own undisclosed “responsive actions” if the White House occupant follows through on his threat, noting that the country was “not afraid” of a looming commercial battle.

Last Friday, Trump retaliated at China’s decision to reinforce its rules for foreign shipments of critical elements, charging the Chinese leadership of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the global community “under its control”.

Additionally, he threatened to withdraw from a planned meeting with China’s President Xi, which was expected to take place during a conference in the Republic of Korea in the coming weeks.

The former president’s remarks on that day rattled financial markets, with the S&P 500 dropping 2.7%, marking its biggest drop since earlier this year.

These statements revived fears of a commercial dispute between the US and China.

This past spring, the two sides had agreed to drop triple-digit tariffs on each other’s products, which had created the possibility of trade halting between the economic powers.

This left, US tariffs on Chinese goods subject to an additional import tax compared with the beginning of 2025, while items from the United States entering the country incur a ten percent duty.

The most recent comments from China – published by the Commerce Ministry in the format of formal replies to press queries – mirrored terminology from the height of the recent trade conflict.

Officials denounced American limits on exports on electronic components while supporting China’s own overseas sale regulations on key elements as “standard procedures” to protect domestic safety and that of every country.

The spokesperson stated that for “many years”, the US had “expanded the interpretation” of national security, misused foreign shipment regulations and “implemented” biased policies against Beijing.

“Turning to” tariff threats is not the correct approach to interact with the Chinese government,” the spokesperson commented.

“The nation’s view” on a trade conflict has remained unchanging: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”

Recently, China revealed it was reinforcing overseas sale regulations on rare earths and further resources vital for high-technology production.

This was seen as a significant step, as the state refines about ninety percent of the planet’s critical minerals, which are utilized in goods such as solar panels and handheld devices.

The recent comments from Washington and Beijing are being viewed by analysts as a means of enhancing bargaining power prior to forthcoming discussions.

Remains uncertain whether a meeting between the former president and President Xi, expected at a summit in South Korea in the coming weeks, will go ahead.
